Pupils work in teams to discuss what we need to survive and the importance of teamwork and cooperation. They will use teamwork to build shelters and light fires by friction! Later in the day backwoods cooking activities will introduce children to food preparation and how to cook on an open fire. Dishes cooked may be roasted, fryed, baked or boiled – a variety of savoury or sweet recipes cooked in the great outdoors!

Activities include:

  • Fire safety and lighting fires by friction
  • Building different types of shelter
  • Preparing a fire for cooking on
  • Practical ‘hands-on’ food preparation
  • Cooking on a fire and tasting!

Studies:

What do we need to survive?
Working in teams, children will build shelters, light fires and prepare a fire to cook on.
Food will be prepared, cooked and then tasted in the great outdoors!
A great day to use as a stimulus for writing.

“The fire is the main comfort of the camp, whether in summer or winter, and is about as ample at one season or another. It is as well for cheerfulness as for warmth and dryness”

What People Say

Sam is a wonderful trainer.  His outdoor pursuits inspired us with a multitude of reasons to embrace all aspects of nature and outdoor life. The students attending this course were all motivated to follow in Sam’s footsteps and engage children in a variety of fun outdoor activities with children in their own settings.

Wendy Jackson, Bishop Auckland College

A great hands-on training day – loads of new ideas and I now feel more confident to use the outdoors with children.

Kay Murray, Pelton Community Primary

Sam’s approach to our science topic, ‘dissolving’, promoted autonomy and self discovery. The children learnt some theory, put the theory into practise and then explained what had happened – the children loved it! I have learnt that the children need to have time for self discovery in order to better understand science. Sam was extremely organised and it made for a stress free activity day. I’d seriously recommend Sam to other schools, he’s great!

Dawn Whaley, Hartside Primary School

We wanted a high interest, active day with lots for the children to get stuck into and we got that from Mark. Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design with aspects of Communication and Language were successfully delivered. The delivery and management of the day was very good. Communication beforehand was quick and thorough. We really enjoyed the day, thank you!

Ashleigh Walker, Chopwell Primary

Sam is absolutely fantastic at what he does and we consider ourselves incredibly lucky to have him as part of our team! The children adore their time with him and his weekly Forest School sessions are so engaging, even the staff look forward to donning their waterproofs and wellies to join in (muddy puddles and all)! Over the past few years, we have used SC.OUT.ED to deliver sessions, both in and out of school, and the response from children, staff and parents has always been phenomenal…and the children can’t stop talking about their learning with a huge smile (what more could we ask for?!). If you are looking for highly-skilled practitioners to enhance your curriculum offer with exciting & challenging outdoor learning opportunities, look no further than SC.OUT.ED; we wouldn’t hesitate in recommending them!
