SC.OUT.ED, working in partnership with Ushaw, deliver exciting & adventurous days in the amazing grounds surrounding the main house. Ushaw has a long tradition of embracing the outdoors and the grounds have been used for 100s of years for sports particular to the college.

Due to the adventurous nature of the activities and encouraging children to become more active, Sports Premium Funding can be used to access this programme.

All activities are delivered by qualified staff.

Sports:

‘Cat’ is a sport unique to Ushaw. Played on a circular ring, like baseball.

‘Battledore’ is like squash. It is played against high three sided courts of the outer walls and the object is simply to hit a shot that your opponent cannot return.

Sports:

‘Handball’ is played in small cave-like spaces, set back into the outer walls.. It is, again, rather like squash but with the addition of being able to hit the ball off the ceiling too. Played with large thick gloves rather than a racquet.

What People Say

We wanted a high interest, active day with lots for the children to get stuck into and we got that from Mark. Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design with aspects of Communication and Language were successfully delivered. The delivery and management of the day was very good. Communication beforehand was quick and thorough. We really enjoyed the day, thank you!

Ashleigh Walker, Chopwell Primary

Sam has worked with our children to teach them about saving and conserving energy. He explained a complicated concept in an entertaining and lively way that was accessible to all our children. He was friendly and approachable, encouraging easy communication with staff and children.
The children thoroughly enjoyed his lessons and continued to talk about what they had learnt, long after Sam had left. Sam has also been invaluable in promoting outdoor learning, training staff and has run inspirational forest schools sessions with our children. I would thoroughly recommend him to others!

Jeanne O’Keefe, Oxclose Nursery

Sam’s approach to our science topic, ‘dissolving’, promoted autonomy and self discovery. The children learnt some theory, put the theory into practise and then explained what had happened – the children loved it! I have learnt that the children need to have time for self discovery in order to better understand science. Sam was extremely organised and it made for a stress free activity day. I’d seriously recommend Sam to other schools, he’s great!

Dawn Whaley, Hartside Primary School

Over the three sessions, all the children learnt new skills and enjoyed their time outdoors! It gave me increased knowledge and the confidence to plan and to deliver similar activities myself. The original aim, to link to PE and specifically an outdoor and adventurous activity core task, was met – especially on teamworking and cooperation. All the sessions were well planned and organised and they were delivered and managed well. Every activity challenged the children and taught them new skills. It was good to see less confident children have the opportunity to shine too!

Denise Hannon, St Chad’s RCVA Primary

During a den building activity it was great to see how quieter children showed their capacity for leadership and imagination.  The activities Sam delivered were engaging, challenging and required teamwork plus led to some good writing afterwards.
