- The story of F/O Hood
- Preparing, cooking and tasting dishes using rationing recipes
- The principles of survival
The World War 2 and Survival programme introduces children to how people lived and survived during this period of history. They will experience examples of some of the foods that were rationed and how they were prepared and cooked through 'hands-on' demonstrations and also discover the importance of survival skills!
The session is brought to life using the real life experiences of local hero Flying Officer (F/O) Les Hood from Seaham. We show how he used the fundamentals of survival in a life or death situation. On one mission over France F/O Hoods' plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire and his pilot gave the order to abandon the aircraft.....

"We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender" (Churchill)
"Sam is a wonderful trainer. His outdoor pursuits inspired us with a multitude of reasons to embrace all aspects of nature and outdoor life. The students attending this course were all motivated to follow in Sam’s footsteps and engage children in a variety of fun outdoor activities with children in their own settings."Wendy Jackson, Bishop Auckland College
"Sam has worked with our children to teach them about saving and conserving energy. He explained a complicated concept in an entertaining and lively way that was accessible to all our children. He was friendly and approachable, encouraging easy communication with staff and children.
The children thoroughly enjoyed his lessons and continued to talk about what they had learnt, long after Sam had left. Sam has also been invaluable in promoting outdoor learning, training staff and has run inspirational forest schools sessions with our children. I would thoroughly recommend him to others!"
"During a den building activity it was great to see how quieter children showed their capacity for leadership and imagination. The activities Sam delivered were engaging, challenging and required teamwork plus led to some good writing afterwards."Nicola Welsh, Middlestone Moor Primary
"Sam has organised a number of community learning events with me. He is very organised and plans great learning experiences for adults and children. Children and their carers raved about the cooking on the fire and the fauna identification activities in their evaluations. I would highly recommend a Sam Jackson led event at any school."Helen Grainger, Esh Winning Primary
"Sam's session was tailored and linked very well to our rainforests topic. The session delivered exactly what we hoped it would - the children learnt about adaptations and were able to extend their knowledge in a creative way, at a perfect pace and with a range of activities. The day was excellently delivered!"Rachel Harmer, Butterknowle Primary
"The children thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor activities. All the children were eager and excited to find out more. A fantastic day - managed and delivered very well. A really interesting way to focus on our topic of the Great Fire of London."Cara Morton, Dubmire Primary School
"A very useful CPD that delivered ideas for creative outdoor activities and experiments for science as well as cross curricular links. Thank you for a great day!"Gemma Preece, St Oswald's
"A great hands-on training day - loads of new ideas and I now feel more confident to use the outdoors with children."Kay Murray, Pelton Community Primary
"This was the most enjoyable training course I've been on in some time! The course leaders were really helpful and knowledgeable. I feel inspired to motivate the children and to start some growing activities! Thank you so much."Louise Gardner, St Mary's RCVA Primary
"Sam's approach to our science topic, 'dissolving', promoted autonomy and self discovery. The children learnt some theory, put the theory into practise and then explained what had happened - the children loved it! I have learnt that the children need to have time for self discovery in order to better understand science. Sam was extremely organised and it made for a stress free activity day. I'd seriously recommend Sam to other schools, he's great!"Dawn Whaley, Hartside Primary School
"Over the three sessions, all the children learnt new skills and enjoyed their time outdoors! It gave me increased knowledge and the confidence to plan and to deliver similar activities myself. The original aim, to link to PE and specifically an outdoor and adventurous activity core task, was met - especially on teamworking and cooperation. All the sessions were well planned and organised and they were delivered and managed well. Every activity challenged the children and taught them new skills. It was good to see less confident children have the opportunity to shine too!"Denise Hannon, St Chad's RCVA Primary
"I enjoyed the activities immensely because you were there to add knowledge, enthusiasm and a 'different slant' on our habitats topic. Your delivery at our school was fantastic and our aims to increase the children's knowledge and enjoyment were met. The day was very well delivered, organised and managed. We were extremely impressed with how you were with the children and your knowledge of the topic. We shall be contacting you again to see if you have any other topics that you could deliver."Andrea Farlow, Cockton Hill Junior School
"The session was booked to enhance the children's imagination - it definitely delivered on this! The day was organised brilliantly and was enjojed by both children and adults....the children were asking when you were coming back for the rest of the week!"Amy Foster, Delves Lane Primary
"We wanted a high interest, active day with lots for the children to get stuck into and we got that from Mark. Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design with aspects of Communication and Language were successfully delivered. The delivery and management of the day was very good. Communication beforehand was quick and thorough. We really enjoyed the day, thank you!"Ashleigh Walker, Chopwell Primary
"The children thoroughly enjoyed the session and developed their knowledge about the Stone Age. The day was fantastic. It was delivered very well, the children were engaged all day and they learnt a lot about the topic, as well as developing skills such as team building and problem solving."Nicola Cooke, St. Anne's CE Primary
